Humpbacks on the Sea of Cortez
Local educator and researcher Urmas Kaldveer, Ph.D., recently returned from a whale researching expedition on the Sea of Cortez in Mexico. Readers may remember Kaldveer for his 32 years of experience teaching at Mendocino College or for his previous research projects on coral reefs. The Real Jaws
This year is the thirtieth anniversary of JAWS which, literally saw people running from the movie houses and never again entering the sea and this was also the beginning of the end for the white shark. Before Jaws tore up the silver screens, a shark was a shark but after jaws, a shark was a great white shark and this shark now had a value on its head. Before the movie, a fisherman would sell you the jaw of a great white shark for fifty bucks. After jaws, that same jaw would cost hundreds more. Just months ago, a famous celebrity purchased a set of jaws from a six meter white shark caught in Gansbaai in 1986 for a reported sum of over a million rands. In South Africa, America and Australia, monster shark fishing became big business and big headlines as a band of shark hunters kept trying to set new records. These concerted efforts knocked a big dent in the white shark breading stock. Peoples fear for the shark far overshadowed any possible sympathy for these much misunderstood creatures so when they were hauled in at the end of large hooks, nobody lifted and eye brow.

Sibirien – Kerteminde
